This is typically a calmer area and therefore might be better for beginners, and we love how the park has a sweet little network of tidal creeks and marsh byways that are ripe for exploring on for sunset or a Sunday morning. Also, as you navigate the waterways in this picturesque area be on the lookout for herons, egrets, and even the occasional dolphin.
Copahee Sound, Mount Pleasant
The word is out, and this is one of our secret put in spots in the area. Though it can be highly tidal and sometimes a bit rougher water, the expansive never-ending marshlands and incredible views of the Intracoastal Waterway are unparalleled. Paddling through Copahee Sound feels like you are miles away from civilization though just a few minutes from the heart of Mount P in reality. And we have to say the untouched beauty of this area is perfect for spotting a wide variety of birds and fish.
Shem Creek Park, Mount Pleasant
Shem Creek Park is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. We love that there is always a lively scene in this vibrant area, though word to the wise, this does not make this tops of our list for peaceful paddles. That being said, you’ll be treated to views of shrimp boats, bustling fishing boats, lively waterfront restaurants, and super playful dolphins. In fact, this has to be one of the top spots for spotting dolphin, and boy do they put on a show.
Bohicket Creek, Johns Island
Located on Johns Island, Bohicket Creek offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. This picturesque waterway is lined with ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss and provides a peaceful setting for a relaxing paddle. The creek is also home to diverse wildlife, including otters, alligators, and a variety of bird species, making it a great spot for nature lovers.
Mingo Point, Kiawah Island
Mingo Point on Kiawah Island is another fantastic spot for kayaking in the Charleston area. This scenic location offers stunning views of the Kiawah River and its surrounding marshlands, and one of our favorite spots for a sunset. Paddling at Mingo Point allows you to explore the natural beauty of Kiawah Island up close.
