Cannon Street's Newest Rooms All Started Somewhere Else

November 5, 2026

A wine shelf sits beside a bar at 90 Cannon Street. Across the street at 89, the ground floor of The Charlee on Cannon is the address for Alteño, a hearth kitchen built around the food of Mexico's Jalisco Highlands. A few doors east at 61, a hand roll counter serves lunch. Farther west at 114, a brewery from Mount Pleasant has moved into the ground floor of a 19th-century house.

Every one of those names is new to Cannon Street in 2026, and every one began somewhere else first. That pattern explains how the street feels now. The operators coming to Cannonborough-Elliotborough this year already had a following when they arrived. The rooms they built are smaller and looser than the dinner-only restaurants that made the corridor's name, and they keep longer hours.

Fifty-three street numbers, four new names

Cannon Street's 2026 additions fit between 61 and 114, which makes this stretch of the neighborhood easy to cover on foot.

Address Place Timing What it is
61 Cannon St. Kyn Opened August 2026 Hand roll bar and cocktail lounge, lunch and dinner
89 Cannon St. Alteño Announced 2026 Jalisco Highlands cooking from a Denver team
90 Cannon St. Sonder Wine Bar + Retail Shop Open by April 10, 2026 Wine bar, retail shelves, small plates
114 Cannon St. Two Blokes Brewing Opened Aug. 11, 2026 50-seat taproom with a covered patio

Two side-street openings round out the year. Bareo opened Feb. 13 at 73 Spring St., and the Post and Courier reported that the Japanese-Filipino restaurant comes from Nikko Cagalanan and Paula Kramer. Annie Mae's Bakeshop, owned by Annie and Jason Vieira, is at 185 St. Philip St. and was open by April.

Every one of them had a track record first

None of the Cannon Street newcomers is an untested idea. Each had already built a following in another format.

Kyn started as a pop-up known for hand rolls, crudos and noodles. According to Explore Charleston's fall roundup, the 61 Cannon location is the pop-up's permanent home, with chefs Tae Woo Lee and Peter Marcus preparing seafood at the bar and wrapping it in nori with warm rice.

Two Blokes Brewing has been pouring at 547 Long Point Road in Mount Pleasant since 2016. Rhett and Haley Anderson bought the business in April 2023, and Charleston City Paper reported that they had always envisioned expanding, with a downtown location becoming one of their goals. In the same piece, Rhett Anderson described what is driving brewery growth right now:

"Existing breweries are opening additional taprooms and focusing more on hospitality and customer experience rather than distribution."

His comment describes the whole block, not just his own taproom. A second location brings customers who already know the name. The Cannon Street taproom has a brewery and wine bar, 50 seats on the ground floor of a 19th-century home, a covered patio and a small-batch system for specialty and experimental releases.

Sonder came from two industry careers. Holy City Sinner reported that co-owner Michelle Kauczka has a background in beverage distribution and education and runs the wine program, and that co-owner Jill Schenzel, a longtime hospitality professional, wrote the small-plates menu.

Bareo took over the 73 Spring St. space that Kultura had occupied. Kultura moved to 267 Rutledge Ave., so it is still in the neighborhood, a few blocks from its old address.

The new rooms suit a short visit

Because these operators arrived with established concepts, they could build for the way a neighborhood actually uses a street during the week. The new formats show that.

Sonder works as a shop as much as a bar. The room has bar seating, retail shelves, a lounge area and a private back patio, so a bottle can go home without a table reservation. Happy hour runs daily from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays are Industry Appreciation Day, with all-day specials for hospitality workers, frontline workers and the wider community. The owners have also announced plans for a wine club and educational tastings. Highlights include a glass of sparkling wine with a caviar bump and rotating tasting pours, the kind of order that fits a half-hour stop.

Kyn serves lunch as well as dinner. A hand roll is built to be eaten as soon as it is made, which suits a counter better than a long tasting menu. The Two Blokes covered patio adds a casual place to sit at the western end of the stretch.

Taken together, these spots give Cannon Street several ways to spend an evening that do not require a booking weeks in advance. You can buy a bottle at 90, have a hand roll at 61, then finish with a pint or a glass at 114. Each stop works without a dinner plan attached.

89 Cannon carries the biggest reputation

Alteño, at 89 Cannon St. on the ground floor of The Charlee on Cannon, is the most decorated name on the street's 2026 list. It follows the same pattern as the rest, at a much larger scale.

Johnny and Kasie Curiel, founders of Fonda Fina Hospitality, opened the original Alteño in Denver in 2025. Holy City Sinner reported that the Denver restaurant is Michelin-recommended and was named one of Esquire's Best New Restaurants of 2025. The couple's other Denver restaurants, Alma Fonda Fina and Mezcaleria Alma, have each earned one Michelin star. Johnny Curiel was Michelin Colorado's Young Chef of the Year in 2024 and was a finalist this year for the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Mountain.

The Charleston restaurant is the second Alteño. Its concept is built around the campestre style of the Jalisco Highlands, with cevichería-inspired raw dishes and vegetables and proteins cooked on a large hearth. The name honors Curiel's father, also a chef and restaurateur. Curiel told Holy City Sinner that much of his cooking draws on Mexico's coastal traditions, and he described Charleston's coastal identity as a natural fit for that approach.

On the street, Alteño's address puts the most decorated kitchen in the 2026 group directly across from Sonder at 90 Cannon St.

The anchors that set the standard

The newcomers had a strong base to build on. Cannonborough-Elliotborough's best-known restaurants are evening rooms, and several have now been open long enough to be fixtures.

The Grocery at 4 Cannon St. is marking its 15th year in 2026. In its Summer 2026 Top 50, Charleston City Paper listed it as dinner service Tuesday through Sunday, with Executive Chef and Owner Kevin Johnson still running the kitchen. The Dirty Green Tomato, a dirty martini made with Hat Trick Botanical Gin and pickled green tomato brine, has been on the menu since opening day.

The same list includes Estadio at 122 Spring St., which opened in October 2019 with executive chef Jeremy Gozlan leading the kitchen, and Chubby Fish at 252 Coming St., which opened in June 2018 and where chef James London leads the kitchen.

Those three restaurants turned the neighborhood into a dinner destination. The 2026 openings fill in other hours of the day. Kyn serves lunch, Sonder runs a 4 p.m. happy hour and sells bottles to take home, Two Blokes has a patio and small-batch beer, and Annie Mae's bakes on St. Philip. Alteño's address at 89 sits in the middle of the stretch.
